Small land-based vessel specially built for
rescuing swimmers in danger of drowning, or a
boat carried aboard a larger ship in case of
a need to abandon ship. In the UK, the Royal
National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), founded
1824, provides a voluntarily crewed and
supported service. The US and Canadian
coastguards are services of the governments.
A modern RNLI boat is about 16 m/52 ft long
and self-righting, so that it is virtually
unsinkable. Inflatable lifeboats are used for
inshore work.
