  3. boat carried aboard a larger ship in case of
  4. a need to abandon ship. In the UK, the Royal
  5. National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), founded
  6. 1824, provides a voluntarily crewed and
  7. supported service. The US and Canadian
  8. coastguards are services of the governments.
  9. A modern RNLI boat is about 16 m/52 ft long
  10. and self-righting, so that it is virtually
  11. unsinkable. Inflatable lifeboats are used for
  12. inshore work.
